If you have ever had a yearning to write but feel you need some nurturing and guidance in the process then allow me to accompany you on your journey.
My name is Nigel Baldwin and I am an established writer and storyteller - you can read some background about me here

But....

If you're looking for a magic formula to write a guaranteed best-seller, hit theatre piece or screenplay for a dead-cert Hollywood blockbuster........

I can't help you.

If you want to know the insider secrets of successful writing
that only established writers know..............

I can't help you.

If you want to write a novel in 10 days.......

I can't help you there either.

Why not?

Because offers to help you accomplish the above are generally vacuous.

Why?

  • No-one knows what will become a best-seller, a hit theatre piece or an in demand screen-play. If they did know then every writer would be producing one.
  • There are no "secrets" of writing - all the information about the craft is readily available if you've time to look. The key word here is TIME.
  • The probability of writing any of the above in 10 days is remote. (Sure great art has been created in that time, but usually by people who have an inkling of what they are about to tackle. In point of fact an average novel of 90,000 words will require 9,000 words a day. That's a LOT of words for someone relatively unpractised and the first one that comes to mind is exhaustion.)

Claims like these are at the best unrealistic; the most extravagant even disingenuous. Undoubtedly there are formulae for success - many people follow them - and systems for helping you build your stories and move them forward, but that still offers zero by way of guarantee. Zilch. Nada. The only guarantee you will ever have is from a publisher, theatre or film producer (i.e. not a teacher) and that in the form of a legally binding contract. And even then it does not guarantee success.

Nor does a writing course.

However if you really want to learn to write a terrific story and in the process get a great deal of joy and satisfaction by learning to access that creative genius inside of you and combine that with the craft of writing, then I definitely can help you..

What writing and story-telling needs is a lot of application and, for the inexperienced, a great deal of help and encouragement. No course or e-book provides the application. You have to provide that. A course or manual won't write your project for you.

You have to apply yourself, you have to take ACTION.
Mentoring by a long established and award-winning writer can help you do that.

I have always maintained that expressing what we feel is a fundamental need of the human psyche. Writing is one of the ways of doing that.
It can even help heal your psyche.

And it can, if you become accomplished, earn you a living.

"Nigel Baldwin is a godsend to the budding writer. His tutorials during the early stages of writing my book provided the cool voice of trained reason that helped me recognise cracks in the narrative, while his enthusiasm for my work and my development as a writer gave me the drive to create and the confidence I needed to start seeing this as a career.
I cannot sing his praises enough."

Hannah Berry, author of Britten & Brulightly, publ. Jonathan Cape

So what does a course with 'The Write Inn' include?
  • It includes me, Nigel Baldwin, as your personal tutor. I am a UK writer who has been writing for TV, radio and the stage for over thirty years, I have also taught countless writers and actors in universities as well as theatre and writing workshops throughout the UK. Although principally a dramatist, I trained and worked as a journalist and have had many prose stories published. Currently I am in the process of completing a book I have been researching for eight years.
  • When you join you will receive an introductory phone call (see terms and conditions relating to this) to discuss what your individual requirements are, what you are aiming to achieve and to agree a realistic schedule in which to complete each module, based on what best suits your life / lifestyle.
  • The written course material which comprises ten separate modules
  • Exercises and an assignment at the end of every module
  • On the completion of each module you will receive one to one tuition, by phone, to discuss your progress (please ensure that if outside the UK, you have access to Skype)
  • The opportunity to complete the course in your own time - ths is subject to agreement during your introductory phone call.  Some might manage a module a week, others a month dependent on experience, intention and external circumstances

What the modules cover:
  • Introduction and beginnings, starting out
  • Structure, story and plot
  • Action, development and style
  • Arcs of a story
  • Characters and dialogue
  • Drama, tension and suspense
  • Style and writing clichés

With reference to guarantees, we do offer one however. To make sure I can divide myself successfully between everybody taking the course, I work with no more than 25 students in any one week. People all develop at their own individual pace, so the course is administered in such a way that whatever anyone's pace, I support no more than 25 students at any one time.
